October is officially here. This is the month where fall activities and foods really start to replace summer activities and foods. This is a great month to experiment with new recipes and to start new fall cooking and family traditions.

There are several holidays that occur during the month of October. The first Jewish holiday is Yom Kippur, which will take place from sundown on the 8th through the end of the 9ths. For this holiday you will want to remember to prepare for the fast and the feast associated with this holiday. To start with you will want to avoid foods that contain salt, spices and caffeine before you start your fast. Next, you will want to prepare your deli style foods and store them in your refrigerator on the 7th so that they will be ready for your feast at sundown on the 9th. Great dishes include challah bread, rye bread, salads, deli meats and scrumptious desserts. Traditional Jewish recipes for slow cooked meats also work well for this holiday.

The next holiday is Columbus Day, celebrated this year on the 13 of October. While there aren’t specific recipes normally associated with this holiday, fish dishes and Spanish dishes work well. For a simple Columbus Day meal try making fried fish tacos, a seafood chowder or a fish kabob. Salmon dishes also work well for this holiday.

Perhaps the biggest kid holiday celebrated this month is Halloween. Halloween is a holiday that is normally celebrated with candy and sweets. However, since Halloween is on a Friday this year, consider throwing a Halloween themed dinner party and invite friends and family.
